A friend's turning 65 in August and has Medicare A&B starting June. He can't afford the $185 Part B premium and likely qualifies for Medicaid, should he apply for Extra Help or Medicaid first? Anyone have experience getting LIS before Medicare starts?

If a client looks like they might qualify for Medicaid, it's usually best to handle the application yourself. Doing it online is quick, it helps build trust, and it gives you a chance to talk about cash value life insurance, which can lead into final expense coverage.

I typically start them off with a core plan for the first month, then switch them to a DSNP once Medicaid kicks in. In states like Florida, Medicaid starts up in their birthday month, even if they apply early. Also, most states refund up to three months of Part B, so be careful if you're looking at a short-term Part B refund plan, higher copays might eat up those savings.

If you're short on time, you can submit an LIS application through Social Security and check the box to start a Medicare Savings Program app too. Just be ready to assist the client with any state forms that come up after.

A worry is that if he waits too long, he might face delays in getting the premium assistance or lose benefits
